About Us
Tooele City Communities That Care is committed to bringing together youth, parents, schools and other prevention agencies in our community to help build healthy relationships by reducing risk factors and increasing protective factors, creating an environment where youth can achieve success.
Issues We Address
In 2003, Tooele City’s youth were found to have the greatest level of risk in areas including antisocial behavior, lack of commitment to school, and family conflict. In 2004, a study was conducted which reconfirmed these risk factors and for the most part reached elevated status. As a result, Communities that Care® has implemented three proven-effective courses that are taught both in the community and in the schools: Guiding Good Choices™ to address the issue of “family conflict;” Life Skills Training to reduce “antisocial behavior;” and Lions-Quest to target “low commitment to school.” As these risk factors were reduced, so were related problem behaviors of underage use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and prescription drug abuse.
Since then, Communities That Care has continued to evaluate elevated risk factors and depressed protective factors. We are currently still addressing our original risk factors but have also added protective measures to decrease depressive symptoms and suicidality. Collaboration with the Tooele County School District has helped us update our school programs as well. Current programs include: Guiding Good Choices, QPR (Suicide Prevention), Second Step, Mayor’s Youth Recognition Award, RAD PAC (Youth Coalition)
